Dieng Plateau is located in Wonosobo Central Java, Indonesia. To get to the plateau it will take 26 km drive to from Wonosobo City.
This plateau is lied on 2093 m asl with beautiful surrounding of green mountains with height ranges from 2000 to 2500 m asl. The core attraction of this plateau is 5 small hindu temples that are known as the oldest hindu temples in Indonesia build from date back 8th century to 14th century. This group of 5 hindu temples are known as Pandawa Temples or Arjuna Temples, and they were build there because of the altitude, the beautiful surrounding that it might be their belief that Dieng Plateau was the representative of heaven. The temples were found in 1814 by Mr HC Cornelius, when they were burried by mud caused by years of erosion after the abandonment of the temples. Hindu people lived in this area considered to leave the area because of the volcano activities. Now the inhabitants of Dieng are moslem community.
Dieng derives from javanese, Di means high place and Hyang means God, so Dieng means hgh place where gods reside. According to an inscription found, this area was a free-tax area because of the presence of Hindu Temples.
Temperature in Dieng can reach to 5 deg at night especially in July and August. There is a phenomenon of freezing dew that can destroy local crops during JUly and August. March to September is the best time to visit because that is when the dry season rules.
Not far from The Temples, located a hot bubbling crater mud you can see from a very close distance. The smell of sulfur can be very sharp to your nose, so just avoid the wind direction when you visit this crater. The white-grey smoke makes the a spooky atmosphere like in Harry Potter setting. Name of Sikidang, derived from the typical of the small craters adjacent to the main crater as those small craters come and go here and there as if dear (javanese : kidang) jumping here and there.
Other interesting things to see here are Lake Warna and Lake Pengilon, and they are known as twin lake. Though they are twin and located side by side, they have totally different characteristic. Lake Warna is a volcanic crater lake
that its water consists of sulfur and other mineral. Warna means colorful, because this lake has few visible colors such as green, brown and blue. Even you can see the colors more colorful on sunny day, or even better climb to the mountain from the edge of the lake to get a better sight. The colorful effects stem from the sunlight that is reflected by the mineral in the lake water. Lake Pengilon is a fresh water lake where local people can fish or use its water for irrigation. These two lakes was once one lake but because of a lava flow that split them. In the middle of the lakes lied a small green islet with few sacred natural rock caves located, such as Jaran Cave, Meditation Cave, and Spring Cave.
Dieng also has a unique attraction of Gembel Hair (Natural-grown dreadlock hair), carica cundi namarsensis, Gember Hair Cutting Ritual, Dieng Double Sunrise Tour (Silver and Golden), Museum and few other Crater Lakes.
