The Floating Market is the icon of Banjarmasin city. It was established in the 18th Century when Banjar Sultanate reigned. It was situated at Kuin River which flows to Barito River, largest river at the South Kalimantan. Kuin River Floating market still exist today.
Rivers are indeed an important part of Banjar people. They have been used as transportation lanes and also site of trading. The houses, mosques, warung (food stall) are built along the edge of river. Land lanes are not used maximum as the area are peat and swamp areas. And yet, as more rapid development of construction, roads, and minimarts, Kuin Floating Market is not as vibrant as long time ago, there are less transaction on the river and the market only open from dawn to seven in the morning.
The famous floating market now is Lok Baintan Floating Market, where visitors can experience groceries shopping on water. The market was also established during Banjar Sultanate. The river is located at Martapura River and can be reached about 30 minutes by klotok boat from the city of Banjarmasin. Lok Baintan Floating Market starts from 6 to 8 AM, therefore visitors must depart at 5 am from Banjarmasin city. Along the boat trip we can see activities of the locals such as locals bathe and wash clothes.
There are various daily commodities to be traded in Lok Baintan floating market, such as vegetables, fruits, cooking oil, eggs, chicken, fish, sugar and etc. In the past they bartered goods.
