Meru Betiri National Park, East Java, Indonesia

Geographically, Meru Betiri  113038’38” – 113058’30” EL, and 8020’48” – 8033’48” south latitude, administratively located in Jember and Banyuwangi Regency.
Topography of Merubetiri National Park is very hilly up to 1.223 M asl that is Mt Betiri. There are few other mountains ranges from 160 m to more than 800 m asl in here. Sukamade River, Permisan River, Meru River, Sekar Pisang river that empty in Java Sea.

Climate in Meru Betiri is dry and the forrest is always green all year round, rainfall is 2.544 – 3.478 mm per year and the wet season is on November and March, and dry from April – October. In Sukamade Plantation, the rainfall is high, 4.000 mm.

-From Jember -Ambulu-Curahnongko-Bandealit (64 KM ) will take 1.5 Hrs.
-Jember – Glenmore – Sarongan – Sukamade (103 Km) will take 3,5 – 4 Hrs.
-Jember – Genteng – Jajag – Pesanggaran – Sarongan – Sukamade (103 Km)will take 3,5 – 4 Hrs
-Jember – Banyuwangi – Genteng – Jajag – Pesanggaran – Sarongan – Sukamade ( 127 Km), will take 4 – 4,5 Hrs

Meru Betiri is the habitat of Raflesia Zollingeriana, few species of bamboo, mangroves, bush, and many more. 518 of the vegetation species are protected and 503 not protected species.

Also known as the home of the endanger Javan Tiger  (Panthera tigris sondaica), according the report from WWF in 1976, only 5 Javan Tigers left, and now the existence of them are still mystery because there is no encounter with this rare big cat. But there are evidence of their existence by its feces, fur, scratches, and footprints.

Sukamade, a beach located in this National Park is popular as the habitat of 4 turtle species, among 6 species exist in Indonesia; The Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas), The hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), The olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) and The leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). The most frequently ashore is The green sea turtle. Sukamade is where the turtles lay eggs, and this become an interesting attraction for tourists.

Meru Betiri is rich or birds, mammals and reptiles. The most seen mammals are Bos Javanicus (Banteng) , Muntiacus muntjak, Tragulus javanicus, Histryx javanica, Paradoxurus sp and Panthera pardus (Panther). And most seen reptiles are Lizards (Varanus salvatur),(Varanus salvator), and Sunda Pangolin (Manis javanica)
